The CAGED system was designed to help you make the most out of the five basic chords everyone learns first: C, A, G, E, and D. By mapping them across the neck, you can "see" the fretboard and reuse familiar shapes in new positions. It's clever. It works. But it also builds a cage (pun intended).
You start navigating music through finger memory instead of musical understanding. You chase shapes instead of sound.
As a piano-first guitarist, I get the appeal. The fretboard feels terrifying compared to the piano's logic. No black or white keys, no built-in visual order. Just twelve tones laid out with no mercy: a note equalizer.

When you explore approaches like Wayne Krantz's Labyrinth of Limitations or Barry Harris's Major 6 Diminished system, you realize harmony isn't about memorizing patterns; it's about understanding relationships. You start to hear before you see. Every voicing becomes a choice, not a coincidence.
And this goes beyond music. I'm currently learning simultaneous interpreting, and I face the same CAGED illusion there too. Some terms offer an easy shortcut, an almost right translation that saves time but betrays meaning. Sometimes, under the tyranny of urgency, we settle. We play everything with the same five chords. We save energy. I get it. But ought we to?
Don't get me wrong. I'm nowhere near mastering this. I still fall for false cognates (interpreter jargon for "deceptively familiar words" like "embarasada" which is not embarrassed, but pregnant!!) and I'm far from understanding all the shell voicings on the guitar. But I'm aware of the temptation. And awareness is the first crack in the cage.
Then there's scordatura — the art of alternate tuning. When you want to explore new harmonic landscapes, your "cage" can quickly become your coffin if you don't understand what you're doing. You end up needing an alternative CAGED system for DADGAD, Open C, or whatever new tuning you fall in love with. Without understanding, every liberation turns into a new prison.
For my latest song, I use a tuning I've never seen before: EADGBD# (have you? I'd love to hear about it!). It wouldn't have been possible if I still approached the guitar through the safety of shapes. The moment you tune differently, you realize how fragile your shortcuts are — and how freeing real understanding can be.
Leadership has its own version of this illusion too. We often rely on the same few frameworks, the same "safe chords" of management and communication. But as Edwin Friedman once put it, leadership isn't fundamentally about technique — it's about the capacity to stay present and non-anxious in the midst of challenge.
Maybe the goal isn't to play faster or cleaner. Maybe the goal is to play truer.
